Uganda will deploy a contingent of 160 police personnel to Somalia for peacekeeping operations, the Uganda Police Force said Thursday.
The team is part of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) who completed a 6 months intensive Pre-deployment training course in Peacekeeping Operations
The officers will be deployed in December under the African Union Mission in Somalia
In a brief statement, police said: “In Somalia, the officers will provide public order management, and protection of African Union personnel and facilities.”
The Officers, during the training at Kigo, were assessed by a team of five Formed Police Assessment officers Led by ASP Figalo Maxime from AMISOM Headquarters.
The team is part of the Formed Police Units within the African Union, which rotates on an annual basis. This forthcoming deployment will mark the tenth rotation of Uganda’s police units in Somalia.
The Government of Uganda deployed the first FPU in Somalia under AMISOM in July 2012 after the UPDF had deployed there earlier on in 2007.
