Police in Rwenzori Region have stepped up sting operations to root out criminal gangs that have been striking terror into the area and a few neighboring districts.
Rwenzori Regional Police Commander SSP. Caesar Tusingwiire confirmed that on Wednesday at around 7am, joint security disruptive operations were conducted against suspected criminals camping and hiding in mountains of Kisinga, Nyakiyumbu and Kyondo subcounties under Bwera Division, Kasese District.
Police arrested over eight suspects and as a result of the heated operations, unknown thugs abandoned an unmarked SMG gun loaded with 5 rounds at a verandah of the area councilor called Janolesi Muhindo Muthubya in a village called Kyabisoro, Rwakirema parish.
SSP. Tusingwiire said fingerprints have been lifted from the recovered gun and submitted to police forensic lab for enquiries to identify if the owners are linked to any offences.
“It is pleasing to see a firearm recovered and removed from our areas, and we will be working to establish if it is linked to any recent incidents in our region or elsewhere. Every gun we recover could be a weapon used to cause fear, intimidation or harm to the people of Uganda and have neutralized its potential to cause serious fear and risks to people in the area,” he said.
