Rwanda Police defends shooting dead two Ugandan businessmen

Rwanda in a statement issued on Sunday evening defended its security forces’ decision to kill Ugandans
‘’ on 10th November 2019, In Tabagwe sector, Police on patrol intercepted a group of suspected smugglers who crossed inside Rwanda’’ Rwanda Police Spokesperson CP JB Kabera said

‘’the smugglers became violent and assaulted police officers who reacted in self-defense shooting dead two while the rest escaped’’
Two Ugandans businessmen were on Sunday killed in Rwanda about 1km away from the Mpororo border post in Kamwezi Sub County on Saturday night.

The incident may escalate the border tension between the two brotherly countries. The political tension between the two countries climaxed in February when Rwanda closed its border and blocked all goods from Uganda.
As a result of the closed border, communities near the border have resorted to smuggling.
Mr Ignitius Baketonda the LCII chairperson for Kyabuhangwa parish in Kamwezi Sub County identified the deceased as Job Ebyarishanga and Bosco Tuheirwe, all residents of Nyakabungo village in his parish.

The killing of Ugandans by Rwandan forces started earlier year when relations between both countries soured over counter accusations of espionage and support for rival armed movements in the region.
On May 2, 2019 a 41-year-old Rwandan businessman Innocent Ndahimana was shot and injured on the right arm by the Rwandan security officials as he tried to smuggle about 500Kgs of beans into Uganda through a porous border point in Rushaki village, Rubaya Sub County in Kabale District.

On May 24, 2019, Alex Nyesiga a resident of the same village and a Rwandan national John Batista Kyerengye, were shot and killed by Rwandan security personnel inside Rwanda has they allegedly smuggled a bale of second hand clothes into their country through Habusavu border entry.

On November 4, 2019 a Rwandan national Jean Piere Havugimana, 28, was shot and injured by Rwandan security personnel on the left shoulder inside Rwanda about 300 meters away from the international boundary with Uganda as he tried to smuggle about 50Kgs of Irish potato from Uganda.
