Africa has produced arguably the most vibrant of nationalists from the pre-colonial period right up to post-colonialism.
According to First Son Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Yoweri Museveni features among the top five greatest African Nationalists.
‘‘These are the greatest African nationalists ever! Mzee Museveni is without a doubt in the top 5 Africans ever made. All of us soldiers in UPDF love him so much! Mzee is our hero!’’ Gen. Muhoozi tweeted on Tuesday.
According to the presidential advisor on special operation: top five also includes Nelson Mandela, first black President of South Africa in 1994, Tanzania’s Julius Kambarage Nyerere, known as Mwalimu and Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah (1957 to 1966).
The New African Magazine September 2004 listed President Museveni among 100 greatest Africans. The magazine hailed the president who ‘‘inherited a rundown country and resuscitating the economy.’’
The United States Government has in the recent past commended the Uganda for its immense contribution to peace and stability in Africa.
Kagame is also among top nationalists- Mwenda
Andrew Mwenda agrees with Lt. Gen. Muhoozi list. He, however thinks Rwanda’s Paul Kagame also makes it to the list.
‘‘Nkrumah is No 1, Nasser 2, Nyerere 3, Lumumba 4. We can debate the ranking of the other top 20 greatest African leaders: Machel, Sankara, Meles, Museveni, Kagame, Mandela, Sekou Toure, Obote, Kaunda, Madibo Keita, Murtala Mohamed, Rawlings, Mbeki, Mugabe, Ben Bella and Tseretse Khama’’ Mwenda said.
