Museveni fires Minister Herbert Kabafunzaki

President Museveni has asked the embattled state minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations Herbert Kabafunzaki, to step aside until the investigations into allegations that he was seeking a bribe from AYA Brothers are complete.

“Following the recent allegations of your involvement in corrupt practices, I have with immediate effect suspended you from performing duties as a minister of State for Labour until court has determined the matter,” President Museveni’s letter dated 11th April 2017 adddressed to Kabafunzaki reads in part.

The president added: In view of the above,” wrote Museveni, “you should, therefore, immediately hand over your office to the substantive Minister. The letter was also copied to several goverment bodies including: the Vice president, Prime Minister and Ministers of Gender, Public Service and Inspector General of Government.

Hon. Herbert Kabafunzaki, the state minister for labour, employment and industrial relations who is also the MP Rukiga County in Kabale district was last weekend arrested together with Mr Brian Mugabo, a clearing agent. He was allegedly soliciting a bribe from the proprietor of Aya Group.

Mr Kabafunzaki was arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday and formally charged with soliciting and receiving a Ugx. 5 million bribe from Aya Group chairman Mohammad Hamid. He released on Wednesday on a cash bail of Ugx. 5 million. He was ordered to hand over his diplomatic passport and land title to court as one of his bail conditions.

Mr Kabafunzaki confirmed the development saying that it was not a forced decision. “I was guided by the president and we agreed with consultation from my lawyers not to interrupt court,” he told Daily Monitor.
Sources say, the embattled minister has been asked to hand office, return government car as well as his guards to Permeant Secretary Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development
