Makerere University will beginning next semester (August 2018) give each of the 2,000 government sponsored students Ugx. 4,500 for lunch per day. The money will be deposited directly onto student’s bank accounts.
In a May 15 circular signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, addressed to all students, the VC noted that vice chancellors of all public universities met with State minister for Higher Education Chrysostom Muyingo on May 10 and resolved that the institutions- divest from feeding government sponsored students.
Prof. Nawangwe says, it was also agreed that universities pay food allowances at the current rates so that students can buy meals from caterers of their choice. A meal at most restaurants on and outside Makerere University costs not less than 5,000.
