National Drug Authority (NDA) has named the private health clinics, pharmacies and hospitals administering fake Hepatitis B Vaccine.
In a surprise and random visits, staff from NDA confiscated fake vaccines across the country. Hellen Ndagigye, the director in charge of product safety says “Following a tip off in Mbarara we rolled out a surveillance and we encountered counterfeit vaccines from various health facilities,”
The NDA named Mbarara Community hospital, Devine Mercy, Mayanja memorial hospital, Family doctors’ clinic, Mbarara City Clinic, UMC (Formerly Kadic Bukoto), Malcom Health Care and Kampala Medical Chambers.
The NDA says that Norvik Enterprises Limited is the authorized firm to import Hepatitis B vaccine to Uganda from Serum Institute in India. However, NDA revealed that they discovered that the fake vaccines impounded indicated they had been manufactured by the same company.
A genuine vaccine has a shelf- life of three years but most of the drugs recovered from the various private health facilities were meant to last for four or more years.
However, Ndagigye revealed that fake vaccines have no harm on person who receives it. She explained that the person would not achieve the desired goal of vaccinating against Hepatitis B virus.
