05 senior police officers arrested for extorting 1.4bn from South Koreans at gun point

More than five Senior Police officers from the Kampala Metropolitan South regional police command have been implicated for extorting more than 1.4 billion from two South Korean nationals- Park Seunghoon and Jang Shingu Un at gun point.

Embattled former Buyende DPC, Muhammad Kirumira recently said that police has been infiltrated by powerful criminals who are supported by police’s top command.
According to the Observer, among the implicated is Regional Police Commander Siraj Bakaleke. The officers reportedly extorted the money at gunpoint.
In a statement recorded at the Flying Squad headquarters, one of the South Koreans revealed that when they reached Acacia Mall, instead of meeting the said dealers, they were surrounded by security operatives, put on gunpoint and asked to hand over the money they had.

A sum of Ugx. 1.4 billion was handed over to the police officers before the two South Koreans were arrested and detained at Katwe Police Station.
The police officers now detained at Nalufenya police facility include; Isaac Munezero, the officer in charge crime intelligence Katwe police station, George Kayongo, Kenneth Zirintuusa and Patrick Ochen.

Vincent Ssekate the police Professional Standards Unit spokesperson confirmed the arrests.
The IGP, Gen. Kale Kayihura while in Mubende revealed that the police force is rotten from bottom but functioning at the top management. Kayihura said the lower level police officers are at the centre of several sagas including land grabbing but for him as the Force’s top commander is clean.

“The rot in police is from the bottom but for me as a commander on top I am still very clean. I am on the operation to build police afresh starting with Mubende.’’ He said.
