President Museveni on Friday passed out 6,239 Local Defence Unit (LDU) trainees at Kaweweta Military Training School. The recruitees from Wakiso, Mukono and Kampala districts have completed 16 weeks of basic military and tactical training.

The head of state said that, In defending a country, ‘ ‘you must look at the economics and find an affordable formula. You may not have such a big army but you must ensure it has the necessary strategic elements. For the UPDF, these elements are in place and we are enhancing them.’’

‘’We have the infantry which is easier and faster to train. It should have officers and men ready for duty. Then you have the reserves, like these LDUs, from whom we can recruit rifle men and machine gunners when necessary.’’ He said
The president also said that when not on military duty, the reserves will be into other work like farming. But as the budget improves, we shall ensure they have frequent refresher courses. This LDU training is a robust programme.

‘ ‘We focused a lot on the villages and some people thought they could destabilize Uganda by attacking towns because of heavy motor and human traffic. They started by killing sheikhs. This was mainly done by the ADF terrorists based in the DR Congo. The ADF is still there. They then killed Joan Kagezi, Felix Kaweesi, Ibrahim Abiriga and others. Our police force also got infiltrated. ‘’

He added: We are resolving all this. Of course some people are not happy that Uganda is developing steadily. They will die of blood pressure as we keep getting better.
‘ ‘I sat down with the Generals and we agreed on several interventions. They are ongoing like installation of CCTVs on major roads and towns. With these LDUs helping us watch out for criminals plus other interventions, it will be impossible to commit a crime and survive.;; he remarked.
