Following the disappearance of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Kale Kayihura in the public arena, rumours started flying around regarding his state of health.
The IGP rarely misses government functions. However, Gen. Kayihura has so far missed two State events- the State of the Nation Address and Heroes day celebrations. Gen. Kayihura missed the State of the Nation Address last week at Serena International Conference Center in Kampala. He was represented by his deputy Martin Okoth Ochola.
However, Uganda Police Spokesman AIGP Asan Kasingye says that Gen. Kayihura is well. Kayihura was last seen in the public on 31st May 2017, when he attended a security meeting chaired by President Museveni at State House in Entebbe.
Asan Kasingye told journalists over the weekend that the IGP is in Turkey on official government assignments “ the IGP is in Turkey on official duty. He has signed an MOU that we shall soon brief you about,” Kasingye stated adding that Kayihura will be returning in the next few days.
Uganda Police and Turkish Police have memoranda of understanding on several projects including the construction of health facility and training of special force units. He has been frequenting to Turkey since 2015.
Asked to comment on stories on social media and tabloids regarding health of his boss: Mr. Kasingye said: Treat such stories as fake news.
However, sources within the police say, the IGP has been unwell in past two weeks.
To dispel rumours about his health, Kayihura has been very active on twitter in the past few days, tweeting and retweeting about current events.
For example, when the Uganda Cranes beat Cape Verde on Sunday, Kayihura was among the first Ugandans to congratulate the national team ‘ ‘Congratulations @UgandaCranes . We are proud of you.’’ He tweeted.
Newz Post could not independently establish whether it was the IGP tweeting or someone else tweeting on his behalf. Afande Kasingye, says the IGP is expected to return from Turkey on Wednesday this week.
